Stephen Meek, principal of Geelong Grammar School, an independent coeducational boarding and day school with multiple campuses in Australia, will present “Positive Education: A Whole School Approach to Well-Being” at Phillips Academy on Thursday, February 9, from 7 to 8 p.m., in Kemper Auditorium, 5 Chapel Ave. Andover, Mass. During the past decade, Meek has led his school community in adopting the Positive Education model, which focuses on developing both student intellect and character.

This event is hosted by the Office of the Head of School, the Dean of Studies Office, the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library, and the Tang Institute. All members of the Andover community are welcome to attend. Register online.

Exploring Positive Education

Positive Education, a concept pioneered by Stephen Meek, brings together the science of positive psychology with best practice teaching to encourage and support students and foster well-being throughout the school community. In his presentation, he will share examples and insights from the Geelong Grammar School’s journey and summarize the school’s model for Positive Education.

About the Speaker

Stephen Meek commenced as principal of Geelong Grammar School on October 1, 2004. Meek directed the introduction of the School’s pioneering Positive Education program and the establishment of its training-focused Institute of Positive Education, as well as the School for Performing Arts and Creative Education (The SPACE) for the development of creativity throughout the School. He has spoken about Positive Education at conferences both in Australia and abroad. Meek was previously Headmaster of Hurstpierpoint College, in West Sussex, U.K., a co-educational boarding and day school with more than 650 students, aged three to18 years. He held this position for nine years, providing outstanding leadership at a time of significant change at the College, including the successful introduction of co-education at the School. Prior to Hurstpierpoint College, Meek had spent ten years and seven years respectively at two of the United Kingdom’s leading schools: Sherborne School, a traditional boys’ boarding school in Dorset, and Dulwich College, a large academic day school in London.  Stephen is a graduate of St Andrews and Oxford universities and holds a Master of Arts (1st Class Honours) in Medieval and Modern History.
